Iko & J. Schmutzer, 1924-1925, Praying Angel (1), teak, dimensions unknown, (no image available).

A version existed that was donated to Mgr. A.P.F. van Velzen with the intention of requesting permission to place two similar angels on the altar in the church at Ganjuran. The design emphasizes the angel as a throne servant, like a Javanese courtier of high rank. The waistcloth is decorated with a kawong motif. From the angel’s waist, a sash draped in two strips runs across the hips. These run across the lower body from the ankle to the pedestal. Two strips of cloth also run on either side of the waist. The upper body is bare. The current location of this specific example is unknown, but it is possible that an example of a praying angel now in the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is this one, or at least strongly resembles it, although this cannot be said with certainty.
